Don't Lug Your Luggage, Love it! Sew the Perfect Carry–On
We all know travel can be stressful — and it sure doesn't help when you're packing a bag that you wish you'd replaced! So quit carrying on with a bag that's seen better days, and join me, pattern designer and instructor Annie Unrein, for my online Craftsy class Sew Sturdy: The Ultimate Travel Bag. I'll guide you step by step through making a beautiful quilted travel bag with durable structure, designer touches and professional construction details.

During my class, you'll learn all the techniques you need to make this easy–to–sew bag. I'll teach you how to make reinforced handles and straps, and use foam stabilizer as you create your quilted front, back and side panels. We'll also cover how to build structure into the bottom of your bag, sew a variety of pockets and finish your bag with bound edges and seams.

We'll start our lessons with tips for picking out the perfect materials for your project. Then I'll show you how to quilt foam stabilizer to your fabric, before cutting out and labeling all the pieces for your bag.

With your fabric pieces prepped, I'll guide you through sewing the carrying strap, strap tabs and handles for your bag. We'll also talk about how to make a strap that fits right over your rolling luggage, so you can take the stress off your back and shoulders while walking through the airport or to your destination.

Staying organized is important when you're sewing, and essential when you're traveling! That's why in this lesson, you'll learn how to sew a variety of pockets for your bag. We'll go over constructing convenient slip pockets for the outside of your bag, a combination slip–and–zip pocket for added security and handy mesh pockets for the inside of your bag.

Your bag will start to come to life in the next lesson as you assemble the side strip. We'll discuss how to stitch the carrying strap tabs and side pockets. You'll see how to protect the bottom of your bag with buttons and add a stabilizer sleeve to provide stability for the bottom of the bag. And we'll shape the side strip and install a zipper before we put it all together.

Next we'll cover how to add inside and outside pockets to the bag's front and back pieces. I'll also walk you through shaping the edges of the bag's front and back panels for a graceful silhouette.

Get your bag ready for assembly as you create custom bias binding strips and a cushion that will make your carrying strap more comfortable. Then I'll show you how to stitch the bias binding around curves with confidence and join the binding ends cleanly and easily.

In our last lesson, you'll finish your bag by joining the bag front and bag back to the side strip, before binding the edges for a beautiful finish. Then simply insert the stabilizer for the bottom of the bag, add the zipper pulls and you're done!
