Structure & Style: Go Beyond Basic CorsetsWhen it comes to corsets, adding a custom touch can make any piece shine. Bring that same effect to your own corsets by joining me, designer Linda Sparks, in my online class Custom Corsets: Bones, Casings & Busks. Together, we'll go beyond the basics to give your work more structure and style. During class, you'll learn to create a variety of bone casings, both decorative and invisible. And if you have any questions along the way, I'm more than happy to answer them in Craftsy's virtual classroom. I'll start class with two methods for sewing invisible bone casings in the middle of a panel, so you can get structure without sacrificing style (perfect for strapless dresses!). You'll also learn how to sew invisible bone casings at your seams, sewing curves without pins as you go. | | As we move to decorative bone casings, you'll see some cases where bias tape can lend a hand. We'll start by making a simple casing and move on to a casing with piping cord. Then, we'll tackle a "faux piped" case that has the look of piping without the dimension. You'll even see how to make homemade bias strips that lead to equally impressive work.
Want to add some eye-catching stitches to your corset? I'll share a variety of techniques for incorporating decorative stitches into your bone casings, plus my tricks for keeping complex stitches symmetrical. We'll finish the lesson by creating curved, cross-panel bone casings. | | When we get to your busk, you'll see that it doesn't just help you put your corset on — it's also a great opportunity to make your corset look even better. That's why I'll teach you how to construct a "floating busk" that hides the stitching on the front of your corset. As we go, you'll create a placket to protect your skin from the closures. You can also bring the attention away from the busk. In the next lesson, I'll guide you step by step through altering a corset pattern so you can plan and create an extension that hides your busk entirely. In our final lesson, it's all about your bones. I'll get you in tune with boning as well as the various sizes and materials to choose from (and what to avoid!). Plus, join Custom Corsets: Bones, Casings & Busks, and you'll broaden your options by learning how to cut and tip your own spiral boning. | | Corsets have been a big part of my career for more than 25 years. I started my career in high fashion and transitioned to costuming corsets at the Stratford Festival Theatre in Ontario. Today, I'm the author of Basics of Corset Building and the owner of the internet company Farthingales Corset Making Supplies.
I'm thrilled to bring you this class, because it's a reference you'll be able to use again and again for great corsets. Like all Craftsy classes, it's yours to access anytime, on any device, forever. And if any questions pop up, I'll be available to answer them. See you in class! Linda Sparks | Craftsy Instructor |
