Get Comfortable with Fundamental Fitting Techniques Love sewing garments, but hate fitting them? You’ll find out how to take accurate measurements in all the right places, and how they relate to various types of patterns. We’ll review basic fit essentials — such as overall lengthening and shortening or adding width at the side seams — and learn to transfer changes from muslin to pattern. Darts are essential tools for turning a two-dimensional pattern into a three-dimensional garment that fits your topography. You’ll discover how to move darts for perfect placement, and how to shape with princess seams — which are actually two darts combined. You may find that there is too much or too little length within your garment’s key areas. But don’t worry, I’ll show you how to evaluate this problem — no matter where it occurs, and without distorting design lines or seam length — and use what I call a horizontal dart, to solve it.   Follow along as I demonstrate an overall fitting strategy that allows you to add or subtract volume anywhere within the garment. For example, the principle of a full or small bust adjustment can be easily applied to other areas. Class ends with a final check on your muslin and pattern. I’ll teach you when and why you may want to add extra fit insurance with a second, final muslin.
