Couture Sewing Skills to Create Stunning Lace GarmentsReady to expand your sewing expertise with couture techniques? Join me, award-winning couturiere Susan Khalje, for my online Craftsy class The Couture Lace Skirt, and learn to create a gorgeous, custom-fit skirt with guipure lace. In class, you’ll discover essential couture methods to successfully sew with lace and hand-finish garments. Plus when you learn with Craftsy, you can work at your own pace and ask me questions as you go. I’ll begin with an overview of the tools and materials you’ll need, then explain how to choose the correct pattern size and yardage for your project. We’ll also go over the importance of the toile — or fitting muslin — in couture sewing. You’ll learn to cut, baste, and adjust the toile, then deconstruct and refine it to use as your final pattern. | | Next, we’ll start constructing your skirt by partially sewing the side seams and hand-stitching the hem. You'll learn how to position your lace overlay for flattering results, and hand-tack the lace to the fashion fabric underlayer. Then, sew and press the darts, keeping the lace free. Find out how to shape and overlap the lace to match the contours of your skirt. Then follow along as I show you how to insert a hand-picked zipper at the center-back, and conceal it with a lace appliqué for a flawless finish. Afterwards, we’ll insert a silk crepe de Chine lining with a jump pleat for added comfort and wearing ease. We’ll finish our skirt by joining all four layers at the waist, then shape and attach a petersham ribbon waist facing. Finally, I’ll showcase a couple of stunning guipure projects as further inspiration. Enroll in The Couture Lace Skirt, and you’ll gain the couture sewing skills to create beautiful lace garments. | | I’m a contributing editor to Threads magazine. After studying haute couture at the New York couture salon Chez Cez et Bez, I worked as a fashion designer and manufacturing supervisor on Seventh Avenue in New York’s Garment District. In 1993, I established The Couture Sewing School program and have taught advanced techniques throughout the country. The Association of Sewing and Design Professionals recently honored me with their Lifetime Achievement Award.
You may recognize me from the HGTV show Sew Much More, which I hosted during its six-year run, or from my other Craftsy class, The Couture Dress. I’ve also published two books on garment sewing: Bridal Couture: Fine Sewing Techniques for Wedding Gowns and Evening Wear; and Linen and Cotton: Classic Sewing Techniques for Great Results. | | I’m thrilled to teach you couture sewing skills to create custom garments you’ll be proud to wear. And I love that Craftsy’s classes are yours forever, so you can watch at your own convenience anytime, anywhere, and come back as often as you like.
See you there! Susan Khalje | Craftsy Instructor |
