| | Discover Sheer Confidence to Sew Fashion Garments Like a ProConquer any fears or frustrations you may have had about sewing delicate sheer and lightweight fabrics. Join me, Sara Alm, for my online Craftsy class, The Essential Guide to Sewing with Sheers, and sew sheer garments that pair the flawless construction of upscale ready–to–wear with the satisfaction that only a handmade garment can provide. In this class, I'll take you step by step through working successfully with alluring sheer and lightweight fabrics. We'll explore what kinds of sheer fabrics are out there, and how to prepare, cut, mark, stabilize, sew and finish them to create garments as exquisite as anything in your wardrobe. Soon, sewing with sheers and lightweight fabrics will be no more difficult than sewing with any other type of fabric. We'll start with a show and tell of different sheer fabrics and garments in which they've been used. I'll discuss design considerations for working with sheers, and thoughtfully pairing patterns with sheer fabrics for fabulous results. | | After that, I'll demonstrate all the pattern manipulations you need to design to your heart's desire! You'll see how to add pintucks, pleats, gathering or ruching to your pattern, as well as how to layer pattern pieces to achieve the level of opacity you want. I'll even show you which pattern pieces you can eliminate when sewing with sheers.
Next, we'll go over how to cut and stabilize sheer and lightweight fabrics so they behave just the way you want. I'll cover how to pretreat your fabric, so you know how it will behave when it's laundered. Then, I'll give you tips for laying out your fabric, cutting and marking with tailor tacks.
We'll move on to interfacing and sewing sheers, along with pressing and staystitching methods you can use to tame these fabrics. I'll walk you through adjusting your machine setup, and help you avoid common issues that can occur when sewing sheers. Plus, we'll talk about some ways to stabilize sheer necklines and armholes so they don't become misshapen. | | Once you're comfortable stabilizing these fabrics, I'll guide you through sewing the design details you learned to add to your patterns earlier in class. Pleating, pintucks, gathering and ruching on sheer fabrics aren't just for couturiers anymore!
After that, I'll teach you to sew a variety of beautiful seam finishes on sheers: French seams, enclosed seams, side seams, bias tape necklines and armholes, as well as handstitching tips for a top–notch finish.
In our last lesson, you'll learn to sew hem finishes on sheers: clean–finished hems, picot hems, baby hems and wide–finished hems. Finally, I'll provide some tips for giving your sheer garments the perfect closures. | | Sign up for The Essential Guide to Sewing with Sheers, and learn to stabilize, mark, seam and finish fine garments with sheer and lightweight fabrics. I studied at Apparel Arts Fashion Design School in San Francisco, where I now teach patternmaking, serger basics, drafting and sewing with knits, and sewing construction. I coauthored the book Famous Frocks, which includes 10 sewing patterns for iconic dresses of the last century, along with 10 variations. I recently launched a women's activewear line called Sarabella Sport that is as well–suited to sitting on a bike saddle as it is for an ergo office chair or date night dining table. Now, I'm looking forward to helping you turn drapey sheer fabrics into truly breathtaking garments. Master all the techniques you need to know to sew sheer fabrics like a pro!
